While Baldur’s Gate 3 is slated to get a physical release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in the form of a deluxe edition set for later this year, it looks like that physical release could be in trouble. Larian Publishing Director Michael Douse talked about the Xbox Series X/S version of the game possibly needing 3 or 4 discs.
Elaborating further on Kotaku, Douse revealed that the studio plans to make the console versions of the entire game playable without requiring a hard download as long as players own the physical discs.
“The plan is for it to be fully playable on disc, so that’s the reality we’re in,” Douse told Kotaku. “Fools of us!”
Console games are no strangers to multi-disc releases, even going back to the original PlayStation, which featured several multi-disc titles. more modern titles tend to be limited to 2 discs, like the recently released one Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
Typically, games that may be too large for disc releases often rely on players downloading a substantial portion of the game files even after installing them via discs.
Although currently only available digitally, Baldur’s Gate 3 has been very successful for Larian as well as Dungeons & Dragons Owner of Hasbro IP. The game will also have mod support on all platforms later this year. Check out our game review for more details.
Apparently the Xbox retail version of BG3 will now be 4 discs
Maybe it’s 3 again
